Maples are some of the best known and most beloved trees of temperate areas. Their fall color can be stunning and their sap is used to make one of the tastiest forms of sugar in the world. They also grow quickly and tolerate shade. While there are a number of maples that can be grown in Sacramento, most don't thrive in our hot, dry summers, and many species have a preference for well-drained soil. For this reason, I think there are better trees for our region.
